“The only way we can beat Big Oil and defend environmental justice is with people-power. This fight to get climate champions into office represents this country’s best opportunity to show the oil and gas industry that they can’t poison us, hijack our democracy, and get away with it in order to rake in record profits.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Greenpeace USA Votes?

Greenpeace USA Votes — a political action committee — was created to build people and political power to enact the meaningful change needed to fight environmental injustice and avert the worst of the climate crisis. Greenpeace USA Votes is committed to maintaining its political independence while fighting for a brighter future.

Why was Greenpeace USA Votes created and what are its goals?

Climate scientists call this our “last decade of action” and many elected officials and powerful corporations seem determined to make this the last decade of democracy. Without a sharp turn, climate change will cause irreversible damage to our most fragile ecosystems and set in motion a cascade of escalating crises across the planet. At the same time, we see the growing impact of billions from secret donors, corporate overreach and greed, and disinformation — all of which are shaking the foundations of our democracy. Both the climate and the democracy crises are directly tied to the fossil fuel industry, which not only stymies efforts to address the growing emergency, but also funds efforts to create legislation and lawsuits to silence our movement. Greenpeace USA Votes is a channel through which individuals that are alarmed and concerned about the future of our planet can find common cause and take meaningful action.

If we are going to have a greener, peaceful, more just world for all, we need a well-functioning democracy. But until we confront and dismantle the corporate greed that values profit over people, we won’t have one. Building the future we all deserve will take people and political power. That’s why Greenpeace USA Votes will use every tool possible before time runs out.

What can Greenpeace USA Votes do that Greenpeace USA itself cannot?

Greenpeace USA Votes is able to engage in the electoral process in a way that will support the environment and climate change in an important and meaningful way. Greenpeace USA Votes is able to speak truth to power, uplift true climate champions, and stand up for healthy communities at the ballot box. Greenpeace USA Votes will work to advance our campaigns for environmental health and justice to ensure our future is greener, cleaner, and more just for all.

Will Greenpeace USA Votes only be active in 2024 or will it continue beyond that?

Greenpeace USA Votes is entering the fight to elect climate and democracy champions in 2024 so that we can achieve both the political and cultural shift that science and justice demand. But our work does not end after election day. We will continue to build the people and political power across the country needed to enact real change, one election at a time, while continuously holding elected officials accountable for what they do once in office.

Does Greenpeace USA Votes endorse or challenge candidates for election?

Greenpeace will always maintain its political independence, neither giving money to politicians nor endorsing them. But independence doesn’t mean being silent. Independence means we will speak truth to power and always fight for what science and justice demand. We push all candidates to take bolder stances for people and our planet and make sure voters know where candidates stand.

Why should I care who’s in office and vote?

In this election, we have the opportunity to elect a Congress that relieves the political gridlock and enacts policies that address the climate crisis, help working families, and secure a future where our communities thrive. One of Greenpeace USA Votes’ main goals this election is to show the clear difference between candidates on climate, environmental justice, and the influence that the oil and gas industry has on their campaigns. Hopefully, this will inspire voters like you to cast your ballot on election day and prove to our politicians that it’s time to represent everyday people, not corporate donors. It can only happen if we all get out and vote.

Why is Greenpeace USA Votes focused in part on a California ballot measure? Are there other state campaigns of focus?

This year, an incredibly important choice will be on the ballot in California. In 2022, a historic victory was won for millions of people: a 3,200-foot buffer zone between oil drilling and where people live, work, and play. While the fossil fuel industry spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to stop these common sense protections, California lawmakers resoundingly chose to protect public health over polluter profits. In response, the oil and gas industry spent over $20M to place a referendum on the ballot to undo the law. This referendum will not only impact the air that almost 3 million Californians breathe, but it also represents this country’s opportunity to show the oil and gas industry that they can’t poison us, hijack our democracy, and get away with it in order to rake in record profits. That is why Greenpeace USA Votes has chosen this California ballot measure as just one of the campaigns it will focus on in 2024. This fight is so much bigger than California, it is a part of our broader effort to engage voters to support climate champions, phase out fossil fuels and usher in a brighter future. We hope 2024 is just the beginning of what Greenpeace USA Votes can do alongside communities across the country.

How is Greenpeace USA Votes being funded?

Greenpeace USA Votes is funded by people like you everyday people across the country who are concerned about our climate and the health of our democracy. In accordance with election laws, all of our donors are disclosed pursuant to state and federal campaign finance laws.
